Abstract

911,770. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Sept. 14, 1961 [Sept. 16, 1960], No. 32972/61. Class 39 (4). The reactor cone and heat-exchanger of a nuclear power plant are housed within a pressure vessel which is provided with an opening that is normally sealed, and a cover is secured to the pressure vessel around the opening to provide a containment chamber into which the opening leads. The pressure vessel consists of a cylinder 1 closed by end caps 2 and 3 containing a reactor core 4 and a heat-exchanger 5 separated by shielding 6. Charge tubes 9, which are normally sealed, provide access to the core for the charging machine 11 located within a cover formed by the spherical part 12 and tubular flange 13 which slides over the tubular flange 8 and to which it is held by bolts or other means. Sealing means 15 is provided between the flanges so that the cover provides an auxiliary closed chamber at a lower pressure than the main vessel, which may be insulated internally and cooled externally. In a modification, safety valves or rupture diaphragms may be provided in the region of the charge tubes 9 should the pressure within the cylinder 1 approach a dangerous value.
