Abstract
An elastomer-forming composition comprises (a) a diorganopolysiloxane, (b) a filler, (c) an organosilicon material containing at least one Si-bonded OH group, and (d) a boron-containing material. The siloxane (a) may contain hydrocarbon (saturated or unsaturated), halohydrocarbon or cyanoalkyl radicals; the material (c) may be a silanol or siloxanol containing any of the above mentioned organic radicals or aminoalkyl radicals or a partially hydrolysed silicate; materials (d) specified are the boric acids and esters and alkali and alkaline earth metal salts thereof, boron anhydride, boron hydrides and complexes thereof with nitrogen compounds or with hydrocarbons, and boron halides. Fillers (b) specified are C black, reinforcing silicas, oxides of Ti, Fe, Al and Zn; Al and Zn silicates, lithopone, diatomaceous earth, CaCO3, quartz and surfacemodified silicas. The acidity of certain silica fillers may be neutralized with Ca or Ba zirconate or Ca silicate. Components (c) and (d) can be used in amount (by weight) of from less than 1 part to more than 100 parts and from less than 0,05 part to more than 10 parts, respectively, per 100 parts of siloxane (a). The compositions may be cured in known manner with organic peroxides, or when unsaturated radicals are present with those peroxides (e.g. dialkyl peroxides) which effect curing through the unsaturated radicals. In a typical Example (1) a siloxane gum composed of dimethyl- and ethylvinyl-siloxane units is compounded with a hydroxy-terminated dimethylsiloxane oil and/or diphenylsilanediol, silica, boric acid and dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and heat cured to give pressure-sensitive adhesive materials. Uses: For making gaskets, moulded articles, pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes, laminates and diaphragms. Specification 819,245 is referred to.
