Abstract

A composition comprises (1) an organopolysiloxane convertible to the solid elastic state and having from 1.95 to 2 hydrocarbon radicals per Si atom; (2) a powdered filler capable of vulcanizing the siloxane and consisting essentially of substrate particles of silica in a supercolloidal state of subdivision having bound thereto alkoxy groups through Si-O-C bonds and the carbon attached to oxygen is also attached to hydrogen, the substrate particles having an average surface area from 250 to 400 square metres per gram; and (3) from 0.01 to 6.0 per cent by weight of (1) of tetramethylthiuramdisulphide, tetraethylthiuramdisulphide or dialkyldithiocarbamate derivatives of the formula <FORM:0809166/IV (a)/1> where R is an alkyl radical, M is Na, Bi, Zn, Pb, Te, Se, another <FORM:0809166/IV (a)/2> radical, the radical <FORM:0809166/IV (a)/3> an organic cation, piperidinium or sulphur, and n is an integer from 1 to 4 depending on the valency of M. The filler is preferably used in amount of 10 to 70 parts per 100 parts of siloxane. Antioxidants may also be added in amount of 0.1 to 6.0 parts per 100 parts of siloxane. Many examples of curing accelerators (3) and antioxidants are given. In examples methylvinyl-, ethylvinyl-, dimethyl- and methylphenyl-siloxane gums are compounded with the silica fillers, specified curing accelerators with or without sulphur, and vulcanized. Comparative examples are given in which sulphur or benzoyl peroxide is used as the curing accelerator. Zinc oxide is preferably added where dialkthiocarbamate derivatives are used as curing accelerators. Specifications 751,282, 762,180, 790,370, 801,134 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,657,149 and 2,727,876 are referred to.
