Abstract
An elastomer-forming composition comprises (i) a diorganopolysiloxane, (ii) an inorganic filler, (iii) an alkoxy-containing silicon material and (iv) a boron-containing material. The compositions cure to pressure-sensitive adhesive elastomers. The siloxanes (i) may contain alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, cyanoalkyl or halohydrocarbon radicals. Specified ingredients are (ii) C blacks, silicas, TiO2, Fe2O3, Al2O3, CaCO3, ZnO, diatomaceous earth, quartz, aluminium silicate, zirconium silicate and lithopone; (iii) alkoxysilanes and alkoxy-containing siloxanes which may contain the above radicals or aminoalkyl or carbalkoxy radicals; (iv) boric acids and alkali and alkaline earth metal derivatives or metal complexes thereof, boron hydrides and complexes thereof with nitrogen compounds or hydrocarbons, boron oxides, hydrocarbon borates, borazoles, boron halides and boron anhydrides. Buffers, e.g. calcium and barium zirconates and calcium silicate, may also be added. The compositions may be cured by heating with organic peroxides. If desired, the compositions may be subjected to a room temperature ageing period from 1 to 7 days or to heat ageing for 1 to 2 hours at 250 DEG F. prior to curing. In a typical Example (1) a soft ethoxyterminated siloxane gum (made by heating a mixture of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, tetramethyldiethoxydisiloxane and a dimethylsiloxane-vinylethylsiloxane copolymer with a solution of potassium silanotate), was compounded with a silica filler, an ethoxy-terminated dimethylsiloxane oil and boric acid, mould-cured for 20 minutes at 340 DEG F. and post cured for 24 hours at 480 DEG F. Comparative compositions are also disclosed. Uses: in making gaskets, moulded articles, composite articles, electrical insulation and semiconductors.
