Abstract

Pyridine is prepared by reacting ammonia and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol in the mole ratio of from 2 : 1 to 10 : 1 at a temperature of 450-600 DEG C., a pressure of 0.1-20 atm. and a space velocity of from 0.1 to 10, in the presence of a catalyst comprising from 2 to 30% by weight of vanadium oxide on an inert solid neutral or basic oxide support. The preferred vanadium oxide is the pentoxide and the preferred catalyst support is alumina although other support materials, for example magnesia, basic aluminium phosphate, zinc spinels and zinc-alumina complexes may be used.
