Abstract
911,251. Vehicle look-out reflectors. HARRISON, W. M. Nov. 22, 1960 [Dec. 11, 1959; July 22, 1960]. Nos. 42106/59 and 25629/60. Class 103(2). Vehicle mirror apparatus for viewing crosstraffic at road junctions comprises a pair of rectangular mirrors 2, Figs. 2, 3 and 4, lying back to back with their mirror surfaces facing away from each other, each mirror being pivoted at 4 to a common bracket 6 secured to a U-shaped bracket 8 having arms 10 fixed to a pin 14 rotatably mounted in the top of a casing 16 securable to the bonnet or the rear end of the vehicle, wherein the mirrors can be moved by operating means from their folded positions within the casing to their operative positions in which they are moved out of the casing to positions perpendicular to the casing, so as to be disposed at 90 degrees to each other and each disposed at 45 degrees to the normal direction of movement of the vehicle. A cover 18 for the casing is carried at 20 by the bracket 8 and this moves with the mirrors. A rod 22 is pivotally mounted at one end at 28, relative to the casing, the other end of the rod being pivoted to a link 24 pivoted to the cover at 26. Slidable on the rod 22 is a collar 30 connected by pivotal links 32 with the mirrors and a spring 34 is provided on the rod 22 and secured at its ends to the collar and the link 24. The arrangement is such that when the mirrors are moved out of the casthe rod 22 slides through the bracket 8 and the spring 34 causes the collar 30 to move the links 32 to move the mirrors outwardly relative to each other as shown in Fig. 4. An electric motor fixedly mounted in the casing 16 rotates the pin .14 through a reduction gear as described with reference to Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). Alternatively the pin 14 may be rotated by a vane in a chamber connectable to the inlet manifold of the vehicle engine as described with reference to Figs. 7. and 8 (not shown) or by means of a bowden cable. The casing may be omitted and the mirrors mounted within a recess in the bonnet. Moreover the casing 16 need not be arranged vertically on the bonnet but at an angle to the vertical in which case the mirrors may be raised to the horizontal position through an angle as small as 45 degrees.
