Abstract
505,864. Vehicle observation devices. CHARLES, A. A. D. May 2, 1938, No. 13020. [Class 103 (ii)] A cross - traffic reflecting - device, for use at the front or rear end of the vehicle. comprises a frame or casing supporting a pair of angularly related mirrors, screening means for the mirrors and a remote-control device for effecting relative movement between the screening-means and mirrors to screen or unscreen them. In one form, Fig. 1, mirrors 7 are supported by a triangular cross-sectioned casing 1 having a cover cap 3 and a base 2 with a tubular attachment 14, 15 by which the device is secured to a convenient part of the vehicle, e.g. the radiator. The mirrors, which are disposed at different angles to the longitudinal plane of the vehicle, are screened by spring-hinged flaps S each connected to a remote control by a lug 11 and Bowden cable 12, the latter passing through the attachment 14, 15. The hinge is such that each flap is normally in the open position and is closed by operation of the cable. In another form, Fig. 5, the device comprises a casing 16 and plate 18 connected by an arcuate screen 17. Mirrors 22 are mounted on spindles 20 each of which can be rotated by a Bowden cable 26, wound round the periphery of a grooved disc 27, to positions in which the reflecting surface of the mirror is visible by the driver or faces the screen. Each spindle may be rotated by-energizing an armature carried at its lower end or the spindles may be rotated simultaneously by gearing driven by an electric motor. Specification 490,311 is referred to.
