Abstract

One or more mirrors are mounted to enable the driver (7) to see one or more extremities of his vehicle such as the rear bumper (5) or a front nearside wing (6). A single mirror can serve to allow the driver to observe both sides of the vehicle or can simply show only one extremity of the vehicle. <IMAGE>

Description

AUTOMOBILE PARKING APPARATUS This invention relates to apparatus adapted to facilitate parking of an automobile, particularly but not exclusively a saloon car. Reversing of an automobile into a confined space can be difficult because the driver is unable to see the location of the rear end and/or nearside front end of his car in relation to an obstacle such as an adjacent parked automobile.
According to the present invention automobile parking apparatus comprises a mirror mounted on a support adapted in use to be located upon a front or rear body portion of an automobile and arranged to allow a driver of the automobile to view the front or rearmost portion thereof.
The apparatus would usually allow a driver to view one or both ends of the front or rear bumper, although the invention also finds application to vehicles which do not have bumpers.
Use of this invention serves to facilitate parking a car or other automobile, particularly when reversing into a confined space.
The invention is further described by means of example and not in any limitative sense, with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 shows attachments in accordance with this invention secured to a saloon car having a hatchback; Figure 2 is a plan view of the car shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows attachments in accordance with this invention secured to a saloon car having a rear boot; Figure 4 is a plan view of the car shown in Figure 3; Figures 5 to 7 show mirrors for use in apparatus in accordance with this invention; Figure 8 shows a support for such a mirror and the component parts thereof.
Figure 9 shows a mirror constructed in accordance with Figure 8 attached to a hatchback car; Figures 10 and 11 show a mirror constructed in accordance with Figure 8 attached to an estate car; Figure 12 shows a further mirror in accordance with this invention; Figure 13 illustrates use of the mirror shown in Figure 12; Figure 14 shows another mirror in accordance with this invention; and Figure 15 illustrates use of the mirror shown in Figure 14.
Figures 1 and 2 show two embodiments of the invention. Mirrors 1, 2 are mounted on supports 3,4 and are arranged so that a driver 7 can view the rear end 5 and the nearside front wing 6 of the vehicle.
The rear mirror 1 is mounted generally so as to be visible to the driver 7 through the hatchback window 8 of the car. The mirror 1 may be planar, convex or formed in two angled planar portions as shown in Figures 5 to 7 respectively, affording a view of the entire rear end 5 of the vehicle, especially the wings thereof.
Figures 3 and 4 show a similar embodiment of the invention wherein the rear window 9 is mounted on a support 10 located upon the boot 11 of a car.
Figure 8 shows a support for a mirror as shown in any of Figures 5 to 7.
An attachment 20 for the mirror is connected to a fixing plate 21 adapted to be attached to the automobile body by an articulated linkage 22.
The linkage 22 comprises three members 2,3, 24 and 25 connected by lockable swivel joints 26,27. The linkage allows the mirror to be positioned to afford a driver a clear view of the end of the automobile.
Figure 9 shows a mirror constructed in accordance with Figure 8 installed below the rear window 30 of a hatchback car. The articulated arm 31 of the mirror 32 is arranged below the latter to cause minimal obstruction to a user's view of the rear of the vehicle, especially the side portions thereof.
Figures 10 and 11 show an estate car wherein the articulated arm 33, arranged above the mirror 34, is attached to the upper portion of the frame 35 of the tailgate.
Figure 12 shows a mirror 40 adapted to be secured by means of a clamp 41 having fixing screws 42 to a vertical trim 43 or door frame 44 of a vehicle. the reflective surface of the mirror 40 is arranged to face forwardly to allow a user to see the nearside front corner of the vehicle.
Figures 14 and 15 illustrate a further embodiment of the invention, wherein the clamp 44 is arranged to be secured to the upper edge 45 of a door window.
