Abstract

911,216. Gear - finishing. NATIONAL BROACH & MACHINE CO. April 25, 1960 [June 1, 1959; .June 8, 1959], No. 14390/60. Class 83 (3). A gear honing machine comprises a tool supporting and driving assembly including a relatively light tool head 54, Fig. 5, movable relatively to the remainder of the assembly to-andfrom the work spindle, the assembly being angularly adjustable about an axis perpendicular to and intersecting both of the spindle axes. The tool T is carried on a slide 44, Fig. 2, adjustable transversely on a traversable slide 12 and the work is clamped by a centre advanced by a pneumatic device 26 on a headstock 24. The stocks are carried on a platform 20 supported at its edges by slides 32 and movable about a central pivot by a pin 34 on the slide 12 engaging an angularly-adjustable block 38 on the platform 20, to produce crowned teeth. The slide 44 carries an angularly adjustable head 50, the adjustment being gauged by a scale 68 and an adjustable arm 72 engaging an indicator 70. The tool is rotated by a motor 52 driving through change gearing and a flexible coupling to allow limited radial movement of the spindle achieved by carrying the spindle and tool directly in the head 54 which is movable in ball bearings 122 and on guide pins 126. Lateral movement is indicated on a dial 158 actuated by a rod projecting from the head. A pair of wedge-ended levers 174 can be actuated to engage a block 170 to lock the head 54 to the head 50. When the head is unlocked it can be urged towards the work by weights placed on a vertical rod 208, Fig. 12, having a cam surface 210 engaging a roller 212 on a bracket 204 pivoted at 206 and carrying a leaf-spring 202 and a dog 200, the dog engaging the head 154 of a rod projecting from the head. The downward rate of movement of the rod 208 is limited by a motor 220 acting through gearing 218, 252 and a lever 216 supporting the rod. The motor is controlled by dogs on the face of the gear 252 and can be reversed to raise the rod and to cause a cam 222 to withdraw the tool. To increase the force on the tool the leaf spring 202 may be adjusted vertically. Downward movement of the rod is also retarded by the friction of a bearing 214 and a spring-pressed plunger 246. The head may be locked after a certain in-feed has been effected. Specification 911,218 is referred to.
