Abstract
Polymer compositions comprise 98 to 60 wt. per cent of a vinyl chloride homopolymer or copolymer with up to 20 wt. per cent of a comonomer, and 2 to 40 wt. per cent of a solid ethylene copolymer containing 7 to 95 wt. per cent of units derived from a mono-ethylenic monomer having at least two valencies satisfied by hydrogen and either has at least one satisfied by CN, COOH or COOR, where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, or contains the divalent radical -CO-O-OC-. Examples of such monomers are methyl, ethyl, butyl, i-amyl and 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylates, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, acrylonitrile, dimethyl and diethyl maleate and fumarate, maleic acid and anhydride, fumaric acid and methyl alphachloracrylate. The ethylene copolymer may contain a third monomer, e.g. propylene, isobutene, butene-1, vinyl acetate or propionate, or another of the above-specified class such as methacrylic acid and methacrylonitrile. The composition is preferably prepared by first gelling the vinyl chloride polymer and then blending in the ethylene copolymer and optional ingredients. An organo-tin stabilizer is incorporated in the exemplary compositions. Preparing ethylene copolymers. The ethylene copolymers used in the above compositions may be prepared in bulk, solution or suspension; chain transfer agents may be present. In specific examples polymerization is either effected in bulk in an autoclave or in benzene solution; in some examples the ethylene is added incrementally, and some are identical except for the yield to which polymerization is allowed to proceed. Catalysts used in the examples are di-t-butyl, benzoyl and 3,5,5 trimethyl hexanoyl peroxides. Comonomers used are methyl methacrylate (Examples 1 to 6, 8 to 10 and 16), methyl, ethyl or 2-ethyl-hexyl acrylate (7), acrylonitrile (11) and diethyl maleate (12 to 15). Physical properties of the methacrylate copolymers are specified and vary within the following ranges:-Crystallinity 0 to 28%; M.P. 94 DEG to 110 DEG C.; melt flow index 0,06 to 26; and R.I. 1,471 to 1,499.
