Abstract

910,815. Making electrical conductors; jointing by stamping; shearing. AMP Inc. Aug. 9, 1961 [Aug. 24, 1960], No. 28757/61. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A machine for crimping electrical connectors to a conductor comprises a reciprocable ram bearing a crimping die, a fixed anvil, means for feeding a continuous strip of connectors, and a shearing plate which is biased towards the ram, and actuated by a projection on the ram during shearing, and which has an opening for admitting the connectors to the working surface of the anvil. During operation, the ram 32 is actuated by a fluid pressure cylinder 12 through a lever 24 and link 30, so that as the ram moves downwardly a projection 129 moves the shearing plate 58 to cause a cutting edge 70 on the plate to cut out a joining portion in the strip of connectors so that it falls to waste down a tube 73, a second projection 131 moves a platform 82 downwardly against a spring 78, the conductor 6 also moving since one end is held between the projection 129 and a notch in the plate 58, and the connector is crimped between a slot 121 in the die 119 and the working surface 40 of the anvil 38. On the return stroke of the ram, plates 125 and 127 cause ejection of the crimped connector from the slot 121. The conductors 6, joined to each end of a capacitor or resistor 4, are held by guides 126 and 128 which allow downward motion of the conductors. The strip is fed intermittently by a lever 100 having projections 102 which engage the strip actuated by a pneumatic cylinder 114.
