Abstract

910,615. Knitted fabrics. MANUFACTURES JEAN BAPTISTE MARTIN, J. MARTIN-A., CHARRIN & CIE. Feb. 9, 1960 [Feb. 10,1959l No. 4519/60. Class 74 (2). A process for obtaining elastic warp-knitted fabrics having controlled elasticity is characterized by the provision of selvedges which offer a resistance to longitudinal extension which is greater than that offered by the remainder of the fabric, the selvedge assuring at least temporarily the required longitudinal stabilization whilst the structure of the knitted fabric is in a deformable condition, the fabric being submitted subsequently to heat treatment, whereby it is stabilized and rendered elastic. Thus, selvedges L1, L2 of an antiladder fabric may contain reinforcing threads knitted in a pattern different from the knitting pattern of the threads of the body of the fabric. Such selvedge threads may be contractable and thicker than those of the body. Thus, they may be of polyvinyl chloride thread of metric number 45, whilst reinforcements R1, R2 are of polyamide thread of metric number 300 and the part F of polyamide thread of metric number 600. Contraction by heat treatment of the selvedges controls the longitudinal dimension of the fabric until that fabric is stabilized, such heat treatment being at a temperature below that required for stabilization of the polyamide. The heat treatment may be effected on the knitting machine, or on a fabric-receiving roller at a predetermined tension, or in a free state of the fabric. The resistance of the selvedges to longitudinal extension may also be afforded by a ribbon stuck or sewn on to the fabric. Stocking blanks 1, 2 may be cut from the fabric, as shown.
