Description

Feb. 24, 1931. H. MICHELSON 1,794,312
IETHQD OF KNITTING ELASTIC TOPPED STOCKINGS Filed Jan; 10. 1929 Patented Feb. 24, 1931 UNITED STATES HANSINE MI cHELsoN, or LARAMIE, wvomrive MEEHOD'OF KNITTING ELASTIC TOPPED STOCKTNGS' Applicationfiled January 10, 1929. Serial No. 331,675.
The invention relates to the knitting of an elastic top for a stocking, such elastic top bein formed by first setting up a loom with elastic rubber cords as warp and using cotton or wool or silk yarn as woof; then the side loops of the woven band are picked up on a knitting needle to start the knitting of the leg of the stocking and the ends of the woven band are sewed together to form the elastic top of the stocking.
. One form of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a top view of the entire machine; Figure 2, a side view of the machine; Figure 3, an
end view of the machine; and Figure 4, a view of the completed elastic top on a stockmg. v
The bed-piece 1 with the end- pieces 2, 2, constitute the frame of the machine;
The warp of double rubber cord 4 and single rubber cords 5, is stretched over \pieces comprisingfirst weaving a band with a warp of rubber cord and a woof of inelastic threads, threading a knitting needle through the side loops of the band to start a row of stitches and continuing the stitches so formed to form the knitted body of the stocking.
I HANSINE MICHELSON.
22 through notches to pins 3. The cotton,
wool, or silk woof 6 is carried on a shuttle 7 and is woven through the rubber cord warp 4 and 5 to make a woven band of the desired a length. Strip 8 is used to follow and tighten the weave.
Before taking the woven band from the loom, a knitting needle 9 is threaded through the side loops and stitches started with yarn from the bobbin 10 with, of course, the assistance of a second knitting needle. After stitches are thus started, the woven band is removed from the loom and the ends sewed or knitted together with yarn, then the stitches started on needle 9 are continued to form the complete stocking as shown in Figure 4. a Y
I-am aware that prior to my invention, looms have-been in common use. I, there:
fore,'do not claim any invention as to frame 1 of loom; but
I claim: The method of producing a stocking having a knitted body and an elastic top portion,
