Abstract

910,562. Buoyant garments. GREAT GRIMSBY COAL, SALT & TANNING CO. Ltd. Oct. 7, 1960 [Oct. 9, 1959], No. 34308/59. Class 141. [Also in Group VIII] A buoyant garment is made of or incorporates a cellular material having individual or connected air cells each comprising two layers of thin and flexible thermoplastic sheeting which layers are secured together around the periphery of the cell and have air trapped between them. Each cell contains a piece or pieces of buoyant material separating the opposite walls of and filling at least a major portion of the cell. The layers may be secured together by welding. The layers may be polyvinyl chloride or polythene and may each comprise at least two intimately combined laminµ. The buoyant material may be sponge-like or fibrous, for example polyvinyl chloride sponge, hair, kapok, or synthetic fibres. Figs. 1 and 2 show a material in which a sheet of polyvinyl chloride sponge 4 is sandwiched between two polyvinyl chloride sheets 2, 3, and then welded along lines 5, 6, to form the cells 1. Alternatively the cells may be formed leaving one side open, inserting the buoyant material, and then closing the open side. Fig. 3 shows a buoyant garment according to the invention.
