Abstract

910,522. Moulding soles on to shoe bottoms. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd., and TAYLOR, J. J. Feb. 24, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 6005/58. Class 87(2). Soles of rubber-like material, e.g. sponge rubber with an outer rubber " skin " forming the tread surface, are moulded on to lastmounted shoe uppers by means of side and sole moulds, one or more of which are provided with a series of yielding pins or similar members between which the material constituting the skin is positioned and which are urged into retracted positions when the moulds are moved into operative position. In the machine illustrated, the skin S is positioned on the sole mould 10 between pins 14, the heads 18 of which rest on springs 20 provided in bores 16. When the sole mould moves towards the previously closed side moulds marginal portions of the skin are trapped beneath the side moulds and the pins 14 are urged, against the action of their springs, into the bores 16. In machines in which the shoe upper is positioned bottom uppermost and a skin is placed on the side mould(s) prior to descent of the sole mould, the yielding pins or similar members are arranged to project upwardly from the side mould(s).
