Abstract

910,418. Umbrellas. MAZZEO, F. J. Nov. 3, 1959 [Dec. 24, 1958], No. 37243/59. Class 134. Also in Group XXII] A retainer, for the sliding stretcher carrier of an umbrella or the like having a hollow shaft, comprises a one-piece housing 37, Figs. 2, 11, having a hollow cylindrical portion 37a merging into a portion 53 conforming to the curvature of the shaft and having an elongated hole 50 therein and wings 40 extending laterally therefrom. An angular finger-piece 26 has one end adapted for pivotal engagement with the wall of the shaft and the other end slidably received in the housing through the elongated hole and urged outwardly by a spring 39 within the housing when the latter is mounted in the shaft and welded thereto at the wings 40. As shown, the retainer holds the carrier 21 in its uppermost position, a similar, but inverted, retainer being provided adjacent the umbrella handle. The one-piece housing may be formed from the blank shown in Fig. 8 by bending extensions 47 to form semi-cylindrical portions and bending the central portion of the blank about the wings 40 so that edges 51, 52 meet.
