Abstract
Anion exchange resins having complexing properties are obtained from a solid intermediate prepared by treating pyridine with an alkali metal and treating the product with dry carbon dioxide (see Group IV(b)), by treating said intermediate in aqueous solution with an acid, e.g. HCl, separating the resulting precipitate and exposing the same to air to give resin Pa ; resin Pb is obtained by evaporating the filtrate after removing Pa to dryness. Pa may be treated with methyl iodide or sulphate followed by aqueous sodium hydroxide and water washing to give polymers of higher equivalent weight with similar properties.ALSO:A solid intermediate which may be used for the preparation of anion-exchange resins (see Group IV(a)) is prepared by treating pyridine with an alkali metal and treating the product obtained with dry carbon dioxide. The alkali metal is preferably suspended in a mixture of an inert hydrocarbon and an ether such as dimethoxyethane or tetrahydrofuran or a nitrogen-containing compound such as an excess of pyridine. The solid intermediate, where sodium is used, is believed to consist of compounds of formulae <FORM:0910147/IV (b)/1> where R is H or Na. The provisional Specification discloses and exemplifies similar reactions with quinoline and isoquinoline.
