Abstract

909,948. Making gas-turbine blades; working at specified temperatures; forging. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. April 6, 1961 [April 13, 1960], No. 13287/60. Drawings to Specification. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A gas-turbine blade is made, from an alloy having the following percentage composition by weight: Cr 5-30 ; Co 0-30 ; Mo 5-30 ; W 0-20 ; Ti 0.5-7 ; A1 2-17 ; B 0.003-0.3 ; Zr 0.001-1 ; C 0.01-5 ; Ca 0-0.1 ; Mn 0- 0.4; Si 0-0.4 ; Fe 0-1 ; Be 0-0.5 ; Ta 0-5 ; Nb 0-5 ; Hf 0-10 ; S 0-0.005 ; P 0-0.008 ; V 0-3 ; N2 0-0.2 ; Mg 0-0.15 ; Cu 0-0.5 ; Pb 0-0.005 ; combined O 2 0-0.2 ; rare earths 0-0.2 ; the combined titanium and aluminium content being at least 6.5% and the balance of the alloy being nickel and impurities; there being at least 35% of nickel if cobalt is present or at least 45% of nickel if cobalt is not present, by the method of casting an ingot and forming one blade from substantially the whole of the ingot by a process involving forging. The ingot is cast into a dumb-bell shape which is inspected by X-ray method and given an homogenization heat treatment at 1200‹ C. for 2-24 hours. A number of castings may be interconnected by a single riser. After machining to size the surface of the workpiece is cold worked by shot peening, reeling or cold swaging and it is given a first recrystallation heat treatment at 1150-1250‹ C. for ten minutes and quenched if necessary. The workpiece is then vapour blasted, coated with nickel or glass as a lubricant and a first press forging operation is performed. This is followed by a second recrystallation heat treatment at 1200‹ C. and the workpiece is then forged to final shape. A further recrystallization heat treatment may be necessary and finally a solution and ageing heat treatment are given at one or two temperatures. The homogenization heat treatment, machining, cold surface working, first recrystallation heat treatment and vapour-blasting may be omitted. Specification 909,356 is referred to.
