Abstract
909,837. Making heat-exchanger panels; stamping. REYNOLDS METALS CO. Jan. 26, 1959 [Jan. 29, 1958], No. 2811/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method for expanding a pressure-welded passageway panel on one side comprises applying a holding liquid under pressure against one face of an unexpanded panel to press its other face tightly against a rigid surface, introducing an expansion liquid under higher pressure into the panel to expand its passageway system on the said one face while the other panel face is held against the said surface thereafter reducing the pressure of the expansion liquid until it reaches a value neutralizing the pressure of the holding liquid and then simultaneously releasing both liquid pressures. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises an expansion press having an upper flat movable platen 3 and a lower stationary platen 4 provided with a holding pressure cavity encircled by a sealing ring 5; an hydraulic system having a motor 6 for opening and closing the press and, for expanding the panel, a processing section including means for supplying holding and expansion liquid pressure; and a control system having (a) a manually-actuated electrical closing circuit for closing the press, (b) a holding circuit operating, in response to the hydraulic pressure which holds the press closed, means for supplying the holding liquid pressure to the cavity, (c) an expansion circuit, responsive to a predetermined holding pressure, to supply expansion liquid pressure to the passageway system of the panel, (d) an electrical timer circuit arranged to be closed and energized in response to a predetermined expansion pressure and to operate when energized by ticking off a predetermined time interval, e.g. 2 to 3 seconds before terminating the expansion operation, and (e) means for thereafter releasing the hydraulic pressures according to the invention by operating a dump valve 26 to reduce the expansion pressure (approximately 3000 p.s.i.) to the holding pressure (approximately 1000 p.s.i.) whereupon a check valve 30 connects both systems together, thus causing them to lose pressure at the same time. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 795,099.
