Abstract
909,500. Nuclear fuel elements. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. July 8, 1960 [July 29, 1959], No. 25975/59. Class 39 (4). A nuclear fuel element comprises a solid bar of uranium coated with a magnesium-beryllium film containing 0.1-10% beryllium and an outer finned container of magnesium alloy pressure welded to the bar. The magnesiumberyllium film may be deposited on the uranium bar using a high-frequency induction heated metal spray gun, or by dipping the bar successively into molten beryllium and magnesium. The bar is then placed in a magnesium alloy container and the whole extruded, fins on the container preferably being formed during extrusion. Alternatively, the bar may be welded to the container by rolling.
