Abstract

909,296. Joint-making packing. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Oct. 4, 1961 [Oct. 9, 1960], No. 35733/61. Class 122 (3). Sealing means between the rear main bearing cap 19 and the oil sump 13 and cylinder block 11 of an internal-combustion engine comprises a gasket 28 housed in a peripheral groove 33 in a flange 25 integral with the cap 19 and extending into a recess 15 in a flange 12 of the block 11, the gasket having projections 35 at each end compressed in the recess between the flanges 12 and 25. The gasket has ridges 36 that engage the bottom of the groove 33 and end flanges 30, Fig. 6, each having a recess 31 engaged by a tab portion 34 of the oil sump gasket 32. When the oil sump bolts 14 are tightened the gasket is compressed by the sump flange 38.
