[Also in Group XXIX] Liquids, including viscous liquids, are dispensed by weight in apparatus comprising a balance and a flow control in the form of a valve closable in two stages to provide bulk and dribble feeds, the bulk feed being terminated by a partial closure of the valve initiated by means engaged by a moving part of the balance and the dribble feed by a full closure of the valve in response to the output of a photo-electric device. In use, a container 12 to be filled rests on one pan 3 of the balance 1 and below the feed valve 10 through which liquid from a supply source (not shown) flows. When counterweights 13 are not quite overbalanced a switch 50 is operated by the balance to de-energize an electromagnet 43 whose armature 42a is thereby released to allow the spring 46 to move the valve 17 into the state shown in which pressure from compressed-air in a pipe 39 is communicated to line 35 to act on the lefthand side of the piston 21 in the cylinder 19. This piston is fixed so that the cylinder itself moves, pushing with it the cylinder 20 and its piston 23 whose stem 24 in moving rotates lever 28 which operates ratchet 30 to move the plunger 31 downwardly so partially closing the valve 10. The orientation of the balance beam is indicated by a pointer 5 (Fig. 2), carrying a mirror 57 which, at balance, is arranged to reflect light from a lamp 55 onto a photo-electric cell 54 which, by an amplifier 53 is made to operate a relay 52 which deenergizes the electromagnet 51 to operate valve 18. The latter then allows supply of compressed-air via line 37 to move the piston in cylinder 20 to complete the closure of the feed valve 10. The extent of opening of the valve 10 during the dribble feed is adjustable by means of the setting of screw 26 whose shank carries the fixed support 25 for the rod 22 of piston 21, and the exact weight at which final cut-off occurs is adjustable by bodily movement effected by screw 16 (Fig. 2), of the housing 15 supporting the photo-cell and its auxiliary equipment.
