In a system in which a mask &c. is supplied with gas through a pressure-reducing valve followed by a lung-operated valve, a by-pass is provided direct from the supply to the mask which is controlled by. a second lung-operated valve. In the system described, oxygen received from storage cylinders 1, 1 is passed through a pressure-reducing valve 4 to a valve 8 which is controlled by a diaphragm 16 in response to the demands of the user, the face mask, or similar device, being connected to the outlet 18. The by-pass duct 11, connected upstream of the reducing valve 4, is controlled by a second valve 13 actuated by a diaphragm 17. The latter valve is designed to open at a higher differential pressure than the valve 8 and thus comes into service only in the event of a fault developing in the normal supply path. Both lung-operated valves may be actuated by a single diaphragm, if desired, and an acoustic warning device may be associated with the demand valve assembly.
