A drop pipe of variable length for use with fire extinguishing sprinklers h is divided into two parts a, b, a being of larger diameter so that b is capable of passing freely into it, both pipes being externally threaded and screwing into parts of larger and smaller bore of a coupling c with a compressible washer d, e.g. of neoprene between the end of the larger size and a tapering internal surface of the coupling, so that when the coupling is turned to screw the two parts a, b into one another the washer is compressed into the threads of the smaller diameter pipe.
