Abstract

A photoconductive composition for use in electrophotographic plates (see Group XXXVI) comprises a dielectric film forming binder in which are dispersed particles of a photoconductor and similar or smaller particles of another material or materials. The other materials should with the binder constitute at least 26% by volume of the composition, which preferably contains 1 part of the photoconductor per 0,3 to 2 parts by weight binder. A large number of suitable other materials, both organic and inorganic, are listed in the Specification. A typical composition consists of photoconductive granular zinc oxide, zinc sulphide of smaller grain size and a silicone resin, mixed with toluene for application to a substrate. In other compositions using silicone resin as binder, titanium dioxide, powdered glass, calcium carbonate, p-terphenyl, and phthalic anhydride are used instead of zinc sulphide. In another example photoconductive zinc oxide is mixed with insensitive zinc oxide or carbazole and a binder consisting of the reaction product of 3 mols. of phthalic anhydride, 3 mols. of trimethylol propane, 1 mol. of pentaerythritol and 5 mols. of cyclohexyl isocyanate. Another example uses this binder with the photoconductor antimony sulphide, and sulphur. In yet another composition using polyacrylonitrile as binder zinc oxide is used as photoconductor and benzoic acid or aminophenyl as additive. Finally a composition comprising particles of photoconductive zinc oxide and barium hydroxide in a cellulose acetate binder is described.
