Abstract
A pigment dispersion for a paint, lacquer or printing ink is prepared by stirring the pigment in an organic medium in the presence of an organic grinding assistant which is slightly soluble or insoluble in the medium, the grinding assistant and the medium being compatible with the final paint, etc. The pigment may be titanium dioxide, or an azo or phthalocyanine dyestuff. Suitable organic media include liquid alkyd resins, vegetable or animal oils such as castor oil, linseed oil or boiled linseed oil, methoxyethyl oleate, butyl oleate, butyl stearate, butoxyethyl stearate, dibutyl, dioctyl, di-iso-octyl, di-2-ethyl-hexyl, p di-iso-decyl, dibutoxyethyl, dimethoxyethyl and n-octyl-n-decyl phthalates, adipates and sebacates, tricresyl phosphate or cresyl phenyl phosphate; also solutions of natural or synthetic resins, or cellulose or rubber derivatives, in alcohols, ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons or white spirit. Suitable grinding assistants are cellulose acetate, propionate, butyrate, or acetobutyrate, polyvinyl formal, acetal or butyral, ethyl cellulose, vinyl polymers, and acrylic and cyclohexanone resins.ALSO:A pigment dispersion for a paint, lacquer or printing ink is prepared by stirring the pigment in an organic medium in the presence of an organic grinding assistant which is slightly soluble or insoluble in the medium, the grinding assistant and the medium being compatible with the final paint &c.
