Abstract
908,582. Charge screens for electric furnaces. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 8, 1961 [Feb. 8, 1960], No. 4365/60. Class 51 (2). An internal screen to surround the charge and heating elements of an electric furnace comprises an inner shell 1 and a perforated outer shell 2 together forming an annular space 5 which is filled by heat insulating material such as lamp black, graphite powder, graphite fibre in the form of cloth or graphitized cotton wool. The inner shell 1 may be formed of abutting graphite sheets as described in Specification 904,377 and the outer shell 2 is of fine metal mesh to allow degassing in a vacuum furnace. Annular end plates 3 close the ends of the space 5, and may extend beyond the outer shell 2 to form a trough for escaping graphite powder. A third shell 6 of sheet metal surrounds the screen, and is connected to the end plates 3. The ends of the enclosure are closed by overlapping graphite slabs, or by hollow end shields filled with insulating material.
