Abstract

Insulation material for lining a furnace wall 26 comprises a blanket of fibrous ceramic material crimped into a zig-zag formation with parallel portions 10, 12 so that the fibres originally extending generally along the length of the blanket lie in the direction of the thickness of the crimped blanket so as to offer greatest resistance to erosion by furnace gases. The space between the portions 10, 12 may be filled by strips of a second ceramic fibre material indicated by reference numerals 16 to 24. <IMAGE>
