Abstract

Copolymers of vinyl compounds and a polymeric derivative of a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids which is made by reacting a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic acid or anhydride in the presence of a catalyst at a temperature of between 180 DEG -300 DEG C., and preferably under reduced pressure, are made by heating together the vinyl compound which comprises a vinyl aromatic compound, and the polymeric derivative, preferably in the presence of a catalyst. The polymeric derivatives may be prepared as described in Specifications 827,361 and 844,620. The essential vinyl aromatic compound may be vinyl toluene, alpha methyl styrene, or vinyl naphthalene. Other vinyl compounds which may be present are acrylic and methacrylic acid, their esters, or their nitriles, e.g. acrylonitrile. The polymerization mix may include a drying oil and/or a drying oil-modified alkyd resin. The polymerization may be effected in bulk or in the presence of a solvent such as white spirits. The polymerization may be a peroxy or azo-type compound.
