Abstract
Thixotropic ester bodies suitable for use in coating compositions are made by heating mixtures of (a) ester bodies selected from natural and synthetic drying oils, alkyl resins modified by higher fatty acids, reaction products of epoxy resins with higher fatty acids or derivatives thereof, maleic treated oils, mixed polymerizates of unsaturated ester bodies with vinyl compounds and combinations of these types of ester bodies with natural and synthetic resins, and (b) polyesteramides whose mixtures of three parts by weight polyesteramide and seven parts by weight lacquer benzine are non-homogeneous at room temperature and whose content of polar groups amounts to not more than 35% by weight. Many starting materials suitable for the preparation of the polyesteramides are specified. The Specification exemplifies polyesteramides derived from: (A) and (C) adipic acid, ricinoleic acid and ethylene diamine; (B) adipic acid, ricinoleic acid, glycol and ethylene diamine; (D) dimerized linseed oil fatty acid, glycol and ethylene diamine; (E) decamethylene dicarboxylic acid, trimethylol propane monobenzyl ether and hexamethylene diamine; (F) adipic acid, linseed oil fatty acid, trimethylol propane and hexamethylene diamine, and (G) dimerized linseed oil fatty acid, butane-1, 3-diol and ethylene diamine. In Examples (1) to (5) polyesteramide (A) is heated with: (1) a linseed oil modified alkyd resin; (2) linseed stand oil; (3) a soya oil modified alkyd resin; (4) a coco-nut oil modified alkyd resin and (5) a drying oil modified styrenated alkyd resin. In the remaining Examples: (6) polyesteramide (C) is heated with the alkyd resin of Example (1); (7) polyesteramide C is heated with a linseed oil modified alkyd resin; (8) polyesteramide (D) is heated with a linseed oil modified alkyd resin; (9) polyesteramide (E) is heated with the alkyd resin of Example 6; (10) polyesteramide (F) is heated with the alkyd resin of Example 6 and (11) polyesteramide (G) is heated with the alkyd resin of Example (7); the products forming thixotropic solutions in xylene and mixtures thereof with butanol.
