Abstract
Organic silicates containing Si-bonded aminoalkoxy radicals may be made by ester interchange from alkyl silicates (preferably of 1 to 5 C atoms) by replacement of some or all the alkyl radicals by aminoalkyl radicals, e.g. by refluxing the alkyl silicate (monomeric and/or polymeric) with a primary, secondary or tertiary aminoalcohol and distilling off the alkanols formed. In typical Examples (1) tetraethyl silicate was refluxed with monoethanolamine to yield tetra-b -aminoethyl silicate; (2) a mixture of an ethyl silicate containing polysilicates and monoethanolamine was refluxed to yield an ethyl-b -aminoethyl silicate containing polysilicates and equal proportions of ethyl and b -aminoethyl groups; in other examples orthosilicates are made containing alkyl radicals and radicals derived from 2-amino-butan-1-ol, 3-amino-propan-1-ol, diethanolamine, triethanolamine and 2-amino-2-ethyl propan-1,3-diol. The aminoalkyl silicates are mixed with finely divided refractories, e.g. silica, silica flint and sillimanite, shaped to the desired form, e.g. a shell mould, and the binder set by hydrolysis and gelation to silica gel (see Groups V and XXII).ALSO:A composition for making refractory moulds (see Group XXII) comprises a slurry of a particulate refractory material, e.g. silica, silica flint or sillimanite and, as binder therefor, an organic silicate (monomeric and/or polymeric) containing Si-bonded aminoalkoxy radicals (see Group IV(a)). The binder is set by (hydrolysis and gelation to silica gel) by means of water which may be added to the composition prior to shaping or taken up from the atmosphere after shaping. Examples are given.
