Abstract

907,618. Valves. BECHEREAU, L. June 10, 1959 [June 14, 1958; Feb. 19, 1959; May 27, 1959], No. 19846/59. Class 135. [Also in Group XXXII] A double-acting valve for use in an hydraulic shock-absorber comprises annular oppositely facing valve seats in different planes against which opposite faces of a deformable annular diaphragm comprising a tubular resilient element, an internal cylindrical sleeve forming one piece therewith and a metal part at its outer periphery normally bear and wherein on the flow of liquid in either direction the diaphragm is axially deformed with its lateral cylindrical surfaces remaining parallel to one another. As shown in Fig. 1, a deformable diaphragm comprises an annular rubber member 20 of gradually increasing thickness from its outside to its inside bonded to metal rings 24, 25 and a sleeve 21. The diaphragm normally engages an annular seat 11 on a piston 1 and the inner margin of a ring 7. When liquid flow is in direction f2, the liquid passes through an annular gap between the sleeve and the piston hub. As shown in Fig. 2, the deformable diaphragm comprises a resilient member 41 bonded to internal and external sleeves 41a, 41b. The whole is secured by a circlip 43a to a member 42 having a radially and outwardly projecting flange 42 formed with a seat 43. The pressure of the liquid acting in either direction on the diaphragm is in part balanced by pressure acting on the flange. As shown in Fig. 3, a thick rubber diaphragm 41 is bonded to a sleeve 41a and a member 41b having an inwardly tapered extension 43. The piston 1 which is made in two parts 2a, 2b is formed with orifices 49 and orifices 47 controlled by an auxiliary diaphragm 45. During the pre-lifting period, elastic overpressure tending to build up in chamber 4 is prevented by flow through the orifices 49 and an annular throttling gap 31d to establish a differential pressure on the two sides of the piston 1. Extreme overpressure in the chamber 4 is relieved by the diaphragm 45.
