Abstract

A hydrocarbon isomerization catalyst comprising 0,01-2% of a Pt group metal, 3-50% AlCl3 and 40-95% activated AlCl3 is manufactured by contacting Pt group metal-activated alumina composition with vaporous AlCl3 under substantially anhydrous conditions at 250 DEG -500 DEG F. and 0,02-20 atm., a hydrogen halide (particularly HCl) being added in an amount of 0,5-15% of the catalyst. Preferably, the alumina is derived by calcination of a precursor consisting of 65-95% trihydrate and 5-35% monohydrate and amorphous alumina, and it has an area of 350-550 m2g. The catalyst may be activated, e.g. at 650 DEG F., with H2 and/or HCl. p Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 830,882.
