A tenter clip 10 has a gate 20 having a shoe face 27 and which is pivoted at 21 to a movable jaw 13 pivoted at 14 relative to a fixed jaw 12, the gate being weighted to cause the shoe face 27 to move vertically downwardly towards engagement with the jaw 12 on movement of the jaw 13. The heel 29 of the gate 20 hangs downwardly. As an operating arm 16 is cammed to cause the clip to close an arcuate surface 31 of the gate 20 engages the fabric 35 to be gripped. Continued movement of the arm 16 causes the shoe 20 to pivot on the movable shaft 21 since the surface 31 frictionally engages the cloth 35 and the shoe face 27 in a toggle joint action slides into engagement with the cloth 35. A feeler roller 33 may be provided and is mounted on a bifurcated arm 32 integral with the jaw 13. Initially the roller rests on the fabric and on movement thereof to the right, Fig. 4, drops into a slot 9 in the jaw 12 to cause the arm 32 to pivot at 14 to lower the gate 20 on to the fabric 35 to resist movement thereof.
