Abstract
Alkyl halosilanes are prepared by reacting at elevated temperatures an alkyl halide with silicon in the presence of a catalyst obtained by reducing cobaltous chloride or bromide by heating it in hydrogen. The cobalt halide may be mixed with the silicon before reducing with hydrogen. The silicon may be in the form of an alloy, e.g. ferrosilicon containing 10-50%, preferably 10-20%, of iron and the usual impurities. The particle size of the alloy is preferably from 76 to 104 microns but sizes outside this range are used. Temperatures at which the cobalt halides are reduced are generally above 300 DEG C. The amount of catalyst should provide a cobalt content of 15-25% by weight of the silicon. Reaction temperatures with the alkyl halides are from 300 DEG -400 DEG C. The examples describe the preparation of methyl and ethyl chlorosilanes, including, for comparison, the use of reduced Co3O4 and no catalyst at all. The products may also inc clude alkyl halo-hydrogeno-silanes.
