Abstract
Orthosilicates of the formula Si(OR)4, wherein R is an araliphatic or aliphatic group are prepared by reacting a vaporous chlorosilane free from organic groups with a liquid alcohol, ROH. Preferred chlorosilanes are trichlorosilane and hexachlorosilane and mixtures of these with silicon tetrachloride. The hydrogen chloride evolved may be reacted with silicon or ferrosilicon to produce more chlorosilane reactant. The examples describe the reaction of (1) a mixture of silicon tetrachloride, hexachlorodisilane and octachlorotrisilane with isopropanol to give isopropyl orthosilicate, (2) trichlorosilane and ethanol to give ethyl orthosilicate and some ethyl polysilicate; and of silicon tetrachloride with (3) isodecanol, (4) methyl cyclohexanol, and (5) benzyl alcohol.
