Abstract

906,912. Printing-machines; sheet delivery apparatus. STROUD, W. F. Aug. 18, 1959 [Aug. 22, 1958], No. 28121/59. Classes 100 (1) and 100 (2). Printing formes 8 for printing consecutive pages of a book are secured side-by-side, e.g., by cement, to a backing-plate 9 detachably mounted between chains 11 by clips 13, Fig. 2, engaging cross-bars. The formes 8 are arranged in the manner shown to produce two copies of each page of the book. The plate 9 may alternatively be mounted between the chains by rods 14, Fig. 4 (not shown), engaging U-shaped elements 17 carried by the chains 11. The chains 11, Fig. 1, pass around sprockets 23 on shafts 22 which also carry wheels 24 for flexing the plates 9 and formes 8 to conform to the diameter of the sprockets 23. The formes 8 are inked at an inking station I and subsequently pass between cylinders 28, 31 together with a web 29 to be printed. The formes 8 are inked at a second inking station J and then pass between cylinders 37, 39 with the web 29, turned by a turning-bar arrangement T, such that the reverse side of the web is printed. The arrangement T has inclined bars 51, 52 and a roller 50 movable towards and away from the bars 51, 52 in order that the distance the web travels between cylinders 28 and 39 can be adjusted to correspond with the distance travelled by the formes 7. The web 29 , printed on both sides, is longitudinally perforated by a perforator 55 and then slit longitudinally by a slitter 59. The web is then cut transversely into sheets 62, 63 by a rotary cutter co-operating with a fixed cutter blade 60. The sheets 62, 63 are then delivered by rollers 64, 68 in under-lapped and overlapped relation, respectively, to an endless band receiver D. Inclined guides 65, 67, Fig. 6, guide the sheets in appropriate relation between rollers 71, 72, respectively, and a belt 69 forming the receiver D.
