Abstract
A process for the thiolation of a polymer containing at least one free amino group, particularly a protein or enzyme, comprises treating the polymer with a thiolactone dissolved or dispersed in a polar reaction medium, particularly water, at a pH maintained by a tertiary amine above the pK value of the amino group or groups in the polymer. The polymer may be gelatin, casein, papain, yeast ribonucleic acid, deoxyribonucleic acid or animal glue. The thiolactic may be N-acetyl homocystein thiolactone, beta, gamma or delta thiovalero- or thiocapryl lactone, or beta or gamma thiobutyrolactone. The tertiary amine may be trimethylamine, triethylamine, diethylethanolamine, N-methyl piperidine or N-methyl morpholine. The thiolated polymers may be cross-linked by oxidation conversion of the thiol groups to disulphide bonds.
