Abstract

A tissue culture medium contains as growth-promoting constituent a growth-active alpha-globulin having an electrophoretic mobility of 4.55 to 4.75 x 10-5 x cm.2/V (in sodium barbital buffer of pH 8.6, u=0.1 at 4.25 V/cm.), said medium being substantially free of other alpha-globulins. The globulin is preferably a bis-alpha-globulin fraction. The medium may also contain serum albumin which, together with the globulin, constitutes 0.05-3.0% of the medium. A viscosity of 14-32 centipoises at 20 DEG C. is obtained by means of the serum albumin and, if desired, methyl cellulose. The aqueous nutrient component of the medium also contains nutrient salts, protein fission products, e.g. amino acids, sugar (glucose, fructose, mannose or galactose), vitamins or coenzymes. The medium may be used for the culture of monkey, dog and rabbit kidney cells and human HeLa cells, amnion cells and liver cells.
