A device for marking high spots on dies comprises a frame 14 which carries a die-spotting element 74 and is vertically slidable between guides 36 rising from a base 12 supporting the rough die element 100 to be spotted, counter balance means 72 for assisting the movement of the frame by means 16, and means 78 to maintain parallel relationship between frame and base. The columns 36 mounted at each end of the base 12 and connected by a top beam 42 are provided with inwardly-facing guide plates 40 against which the frame 14 slides by means of rollers 56, 58, the rollers being mounted in end plates 50 braced to the frame 14. Raising or lowering of the frame may be effected by an air-operated hoist 16 with most of the weight of the die-spotting element 74 taken up by a pair of counterbalance weights 72. To ensure correct contact of the dies upon lowering the frame, a system of cables 78 for maintaining parallel relationship between frame and base is provided, each cable running from the base 12 to a top beam 42 while passing over and under a pair of pulleys situated in the frame 14. In order to relieve the hoist of its load, blocks 106 may be placed upon pads 104 so that the bottom edge of the frame end plates 50 can be lowered on to them. A hood 24 partially enclosing the device is secured to beams 34, 32 which are secured on corner columns 30. In use, the die element 74 is coated with a dye and lowered into contact with the rough die element so as to mark the high spots of the latter for removal.
