Abstract
906,656. Lasts. RAYMOND Ltd., G. N. May 12, 1960 [Feb. 5, 1960], No. 16820/60. Class 17 (1). A last comprises two intermediate portions 13, 14, Fig. 1, of plastic, which are interconnected at their facing ends 17, 18, to enable the last to be broken, the remote ends of the intermediate portions being secured to a wooden forepart 7 and a heel part 10, respectively. As shown, Figs. 4, 5, the intermediate portions 13, 14 are moulded to wooden heel part and forepart blocks 20, 21, by mounting the mould so that it overlies the tongues 8, 11, the last being subsequently shaped to the desired form shown in Fig. 1 when the plastic portions have set. A link 19, affording a toggle action between the two intermediate portions 13, 14, to allow the last to be broken, is provided with holes 19a, 19b, Fig. 4, for engagement with pins 15, 15, Fig. 1. The last is provided with longitudinal recesses 16 which house the link 19 and which communicate with transverse bores that house the pins 15. A leather, fibre or metal strip 28 is provided on the last to form a strengthening base for receiving the thimble of the last. The facing ends 17, 18 of the intermediate portions may be planar or curved in shape and the complementary bearing surfaces 26, 27, Figs. 4, 5, remain substantially in contact with each other whether or not the last is broken. The link 19 and a pin 15 may be assembled in the mould prior to moulding so that they are subsequently integral with one of the intermediate portions as shown in Fig. 4. The plastic and wooden parts may be formed separately and joined by adhesive.
