Abstract

906,384. Jet propulsion nozzles. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. July 14, 1961 [July 22, 1960], No. 25592/60. Class 110 (3). A convergent-divergent jet nozzle comprises an outer wall and a centre body, the throat of the nozzle lying in the plane of maximum crosssectional area of the centre-body which is variable so as to vary the throat area, the outer wall comprising a number of flaps pivoted in the plane of the throat so as to vary the discharge area of the nozzle. The circular jet pipe 1 contains a centre-body which is diamond shaped in an axial crosssection, extending across the pipe between fixed parts 17, 18 which have an arcuate outer surface to fit the pipe and flat inner surfaces 16 between which extend the plates 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b that form the centre body. The plates 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b are hinged together and to supporting member 3 and to fairing 13 which may be moved by the rod 14 of the jack 15, to vary the area of the throat 5. The walls of the pipe downstream of the throat 5 between the fixed parts is formed by flaps 21 pivoted in the plane of the throat and actuated by jacks 22 to vary the discharge area 7.
