Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0906250/IV (b)/1> (wherein R is an alkyl or alkenyl radical of at most 4 carbon atoms, and R1 and R11 are alkyl radicals each containing at most 4 carbon atoms, or one may be hydrogen or they may be joined to form an alkylene chain of 4 to 10 carbon atoms which may be interrupted by a hetero atom) and their preparation by reacting an appropriate homovanillic acid ester with an appropriate halo-acetamide or other reactive ester of a glycollic acid amide in the presence of an alkaline condensing agent, or by esterification or transesterification methods. Examples are given. 3-Methoxy-4-N,N-diethylcarbamidomethoxyphenylacetic acid is prepared by hydrolysis of the methyl ester.
