Abstract

906,205. Needles. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. April 20, 1961 [June 27, 1960], No. 14267/61. Drawings to Specification. Class 112. [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVI] A surgical needle has a penetrating end comprising a plurality of cutting edges merging to a point, the portions of the needle adjacent to the cutting edges having a concave curvature to give an effect comparable to that achieved by hollow grinding. The needle is formed from wire (see Group XXII), formed with the appropriately curved surfaces and hardened. The needle is then anodically etched (see Group XXXVI) to sharpen the edges and polish the needle. The cutting edges may have an angle of between 20 and 50 degrees, the needle length lying between five-sixteenths and one-half of a circle. The end remote from the penetrating point is provided with a tapped hole to receive a suture. Flats may be provided on the needle sides to prevent the needle twisting in the forceps. The needle may be made of stainless steel, or may be plated.
