860,397. Surgical needles. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. April 29, 1958 [May 6, 1957], No. 13542/58. Class 112 A curved surgical needle comprises a point 11, a tapered portion 12 having a cross-section bounded by the arcs of two circles having opposite curvature relative to each other which intersect at included angles of between 30 degrees and 80 degrees to form cutting edges 17, a smoothly faired transition portion 13, a portion 14 of circular cross-section which may have flat areas 15 for a needle holder, and suture attaching means 16. The distance between the cutting edges 17 of a transverse Section of the tapered portion 12, is proportional to between the <SP>2</SP>/ 3 and <SP>1</SP>/ 3 power of the distance of that section from the point 11. The periphery of the needle at the rear of the tapered portion 12 is at least equal to that of the portion 14 of circular cross-section, while the cross-sectional area at the rear of the tapered portion 12 is less than that of the portion 14 of circular cross-section. The needle is manufactured from smooth round wire, preferably an annealed soft steel wire, by a stamping operation and bent to its final shape either before or after tempering. In an alternative arrangement the suture attaching means comprises an eye.
