Abstract

A drug-resin compound obtained by reacting a cross-linked polystyrene or a methacrylic acid resin containing sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups respectively, with narcotine or a derivative thereof, gives a slow and even release of the drug when acted upon by the contents of the gastro-intestinal tract. Narcotine hydrochloride in aqueous solution is the preferred form of drug and a 5% solution in the solvent, e.g. acetone, alcohol and water, may be stirred with the resin, and the insoluble resinate separated, purified and dried.
