Abstract

2-Amino-oxazoles of the general formula <FORM:0905369/IV (b)/1> and acid and basic salts thereof, wherein R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical, optionally bearing hydroxy or alkoxy substituents, R1 is a hydrogen atom or one of the radicals R and X is a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted benzenesulphonyl radical, are prepared by reacting cyanamide or a mono- or di-alkali-metal or an alkaline earth metal salt of cyanamide in an alkaline, neutral or acid medium, or a cyanamide derivative in which one hydrogen atom is replaced by a benzenesulphonyl radical, in an acid medium, with an a -hydroxyketone R.CO.CHOH.R1 or R.CO.CH2OH, preferably in water, a water miscible solvent or a mixture of water and such a solvent at 35-80 DEG C. in a molar ratio of 1:1. Suitably, the a -hydroxyketone reactant may be prepared in situ by hydrolysing the corresponding a -chloroketone. Specified products include 2-amino-, and 2-benzenesulphonylamino- (in which the benzene ring is p-substituted by an amino group or a group such as acetylamino which may be converted into an amino group) oxazoles substituted in the 5- or 4- and 5- positions by methyl, phenyl, benzyl and hydroxypropyl groups. a -Hydroxyketones used as starting materials such as hexane -2:5-diol-3-one are made by hydrolysis of suitable acetylenic compounds, e.g. phenylethinyl carbinol, hexine-2:5-diol or propargyl alcohol, with sulphuric acid and a mercuric catalyst; and by hydrolysis of a -chloro-ketones. 1-Chloro-1:3-diphenyl-propanone is made by chlorinating dibenzyl ketone.
