Abstract
905,271. Ventilation FRALEIGH INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 21, 1960 [Dec. 15, 1959], No. 39923/60. Class 137. Unit apparatus 4 for a room is formed as a composite article with a double-glazed window 2, the upper part of the apparatus forming the window-sill 6, and comprises inlets 31, 33 from the room and outside, a valve 16 for admitting air from one or both inlets and a fan 11 for forcing the air through a heater 41 to a room outlet 26. Preferably a cooler 42 is provided in parallel with heater 41, the heater or cooler being selected by a second valve 23. Alternatively they may be disposed in series in the air passage. The cooler is a refrigerant evaporator, the condenser 35 being located in the upper part of the unit to be cooled by air drawn thereover by a fan 32 through inlet 33 and exhausted to ambient through outlet 34, valve 16 being set to admit air only from the room through inlet 31 during air cooling. As shown in Fig. 3, inlets 33 and outlets 34 are provided in duplicate on the underside of projecting sill 6, and fans 32, also duplicated, circulate air therethrough and over the condensers 35 when cooling is being effected. Valve 16 is in such position as to block off the passage 15 and opening 74 leading from inlets 33 and fan 11 withdraws room air through inlet 31, passage 14 and filter 61 and forwards it through passage 13 and cooler 42 back to the room, valve 23 being set as shown. When the cooling apparatus is inoperative, fan 11 draws air either from passage 14 from the room or through opening 74 and passage 15 from ambient depending on the setting of valve 16 and forces it wholly or in part through heater 41 depending on the setting of valve 23. Preferably heater 41 is electric but it may be a heating coil supplied from a central plant. The refrigerating coil may be supplied from a local or central plant. Valves 16, 23 may be interconnected. As shown in Fig. 6, valve 16 comprises a segment of an arc 60 carried by end sector-plates 62 pivoted at 17 and moved by operation of hand lever 64 pivoted at 65 and connected to one of plates 62 by a pivoted link 67. The arc 60 carries sealing gaskets 63a, 63b. As shown in Fig. 7, valve 16 is a flap pivoted at 17 and having a pin-and-slot connection 79, 77 with operating lever 64. It carries a sealing gasket 78.
