Abstract

591,469. Conditioning air; ventilators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 27, 1945, No. 2175. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1944. [Class 137] Air-conditioning apparatus mounted in a window &c. opening comprises a casing 10 with the evaporator 14 and condenser 18 of a refrigerator disposed in separate compartments 34, 32, each of which has a pair of openings 52, 54 and 62, 64, one communicating with one side of the window opening and the other with the other side with closures 56, 60 operated by handles 58 so as to close one as the other is opened. Fans 44, 46 draw air through the end inlets and compartments 34, 32, respectively into a central chamber 36 whence according to the disposition of a damper 48 one stream is directed through a louvred outlet 26 and the other through a similar outlet 28 on opposite sides of the window opening. By selecting the appropriate end inlets room air may be cooled or heated or fresh air may be cooled or heated and introduced into the room; mixtures of fresh and recirculated air may be conditioned by adjusting the dampers to intermediate positions. An electric heater 72 may be provided to prevent freezing of water condensed on the evaporator, the condensate draining from a pan below the evaporator through a pipe 70 into a receptacle 68 below fan 46; excess may be atomized by the fan blades. In one modification the axis of the motor and fans lies in a plane parallel to the faces of both evaporator and condenser; in another a pair of dampered openings is disposed both in the bottom and top walls of the casing, the upper openings on the outside being protected by a baffle. Air filters may be provided.
