Abstract

890,999. Air conditioning units. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 23, 1958 [Dec. 26, 1957], No. 41471/58. Class 137 An air conditioning unit comprises an evaporator 11 and a condenser 12 mounted in separate compartments 8 and 9 in a casing 2, each compartment being divided into inlet and outlet sections 14, 16 and 22, 23 respectively by partitions which include a fan 18 and shroud 17 and a fan 21 with shroud 19. Each section contains a pair of openings 27, 28; 29, 31 and 34, 36; 32, 33 respectively, one opening communicating with the outside atmosphere and the other with the enclosure to be conditioned and each opening is regulated by a valve 38 which is independently movable to a variety of positions so that selected amounts of air are circulated through each section from either the outside atmosphere or the enclosure. Each section has a flexible air valve 38 mounted in curved tracks 37 and driven by a motor 41 to any desired position according to the conditioning required in the enclosure. As shown in Fig. 1, air from the enclosure enters section 14 via 28, is cooled in evaporator 11 and is discharged into the enclosure through opening 31 while fresh air enters the unit at 32, cools the condenser 12 and is then discharged to the atmosphere via 34. The valve arrangement shown in Fig. 3 allows air from the enclosure to be heated by the condenser prior to its discharge into the enclosure and outside air enters the evaporator compartment gives up its heat and is then discharged to atmosphere. The valves may also be arranged either to exhaust air from the enclosure through both the evaporator and condenser or to pass fresh air through the evaporator and condenser and into the enclosure. Figs. 4-9 (not shown) show various positions of the valves 38 to effect different air conditioning of the enclosure. Defrosting of the evaporator is effected by passing warm enclosure air over the evaporator and an anciliary heater may be used to warm the enclosure air for this operation.
